This three-hour instructor-led Level 1 course introduces personnel who work on or around electric and hybrid vehicles to high-voltage components and associated electrical, stored-energy, battery, and fire hazards. Participants use simulated work situations to recognize hazards, assess whether a proposed task could expose them to high voltage, and identify when to stop and involve personnel authorized for high-voltage work.
Course length and format
3 hours of instructor-led discussion, visual examples, and simulated work scenarios.
Who should attend
Vehicle assembly and service personnel, shop assistants, sales staff, supervisors, safety representatives, roadside assistance, and tow personnel whose duties may place them near electric or hybrid vehicles but do not include high-voltage system work.
Learning outcomes
- Recognize common electric and hybrid vehicle high-voltage components, cables, labels, and barriers.
- Explain at a discussion level the electrical, stored-energy, and lithium-ion battery hazards that may remain after a vehicle is shut down or damaged.
- Evaluate a simulated routine or damaged-vehicle scenario to identify potential high-voltage exposure, relevant controls, and work that must be referred to authorized personnel.
- Distinguish low-voltage or mechanical work that may be permitted under employer procedures from tasks involving high-voltage components.
- Identify how to communicate a hazard, establish appropriate separation, and follow employer and vehicle manufacturer instructions before work proceeds.

EV and hybrid system overview; identification and warning features; battery, shock, arc, chemical, and fire hazards; damaged-vehicle considerations; task-based hazard and risk assessment; safe work boundaries and escalation; role limitations and manufacturer procedures.
Completion and scope
Participants receive a certificate of completion. This awareness course does not authorize or qualify a person to test, isolate, repair, or recommission high-voltage components. Employers determine task-specific qualification and authorization.
